I got to the the club early and got the opportunity to hang and shoot the breeze with some of the hardest working, nicest people and did I mention accomplished musicians on Saturday night. They started late because their van broke down. Let me tell you that it was worth every second of the wait. This is one of the phunkiest, tightest group of musicians I have ever seen!
Talk about phun these guys have stage presence and a comraderie on stage that many ensembles wish that they had. The new drummer Steve Riley and I had dinner together and just did the drum hang prior to and after the show. What a great guy and a really great drummer. Although, after he had asked me to give a critique of his performance I failed to mention that he played just a bit to hard on his amazing sounding snare drum. That thing could peel wallpaper! Pauli the percussionist was amazing too and the perfect compliment to Steve. Did I mention the horn section? Those folks were THE BOMB!!!!! They were so well oiled as a unit I just could'nt get over it. As soloist just phenomenal! They did their version of "What Is Hip?" and they owned it. T.O.P. would have been proud. They also performed some EW&F flawless. Tims' vocals and Als' vocals were just incredible and of course the baddest horn section from Madiso (or anywhere else for that matter) could not be topped. The dissappointing part of the show is that only about 25 people showed up, they still performed as if there had been 2,500. Just let me say that if this band is within 100 miles of your town run don't walk to go check them out, you will be so glad that you did. What a delight it is to know that there are still some folks out here that are dedicated to making music an art form again instead of just a living. PT.

nice review, if you remember, i auditioned [img]redface.gif[/img] [img]eek.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/cry.gif[/img] and didn't get the gig. and yes they are a great bunch of guys. i will definitley look for them. however, things always work out, because i landed a gig with another really great band. been gigging and traveling like crazy! by the way, aren't you in ohio? we will be warming up robert earl keene in columbus in the next month. if you near there let me know and i will get you the details

Great review! Phat Phunktion came to my town a few weeks ago, but could not make it due to having a gig booked prior (my gig was 2 doors down from where they were playing too, ain't THAT a kick in the pants...). But if and when they do swing thru Providence again, I will try my damndest to be there. I got their disc off of CDBaby, and it's TIGHT stuff!! I'd love to hear their new drummer. If he's any bit as good as the last cat they had (and I'm sure he is), then I can't wait to hear him play!
